Diese Kartenpakete machen die Standortwahl in der App unabhängig vom Netz. Du lädst sie jetzt herunter, solange noch Internet da ist — im Blackout funktionieren sie dann ohne jede Verbindung.

In drei Schritten

1. Datei der gewünschten Region unten herunterladen.
2. In der App: Ich → Einstellungen → Offline-Karten → „Karte importieren“.
3. Fertig. Beim Standort senden erscheint jetzt „Auf Karte wählen“, bei empfangenen Standorten „Auf Karte zeigen“.

Alle installierten Karten gelten gleichzeitig — an einer Grenze siehst du beide Seiten, sofern beide Regionen geladen sind. Eine Auswahl gibt es nicht und braucht es nicht. Auch ganz ohne Kartendatei funktioniert die Standortwahl: Statt des Straßenbildes zeichnet die App dann ein Hilfsgitter mit Koordinaten. Dafür ist kein Download nötig — Punkt wählen, senden und empfangen geht auch so, nur die Orientierung fällt schwerer.

Nach Kontinent und Land geordnet. Deutschland, das Vereinigte Königreich und die USA stecken jeweils in einer eigenen, aufklappbaren Gruppe — Deutschland und das Vereinigte Königreich mit einer Gesamtdatei obendrauf, die USA nur nach Bundesstaat: Eine Gesamtdatei für die USA wäre zu groß, um sie im Ernstfall noch herunterladen zu können. Bei den Nachbarländern lohnt sich der Griff auch dann, wenn man eigentlich nur die deutsche Karte braucht — sie endet sonst abrupt an der Staatsgrenze.

Karten weitergeben — auch im Blackout

Wer keine Karte geladen hat, bevor das Netz ausfiel, kann sie sich von jemandem geben lassen: In der App steht bei jeder Karte „Weitergeben“. Darüber verschickt man die Datei mit Quick Share (auf manchen Geräten Nearby Share) — die beiden Telefone verbinden sich direkt über Bluetooth und WLAN-Direkt, ganz ohne Internet oder Mobilfunk. Der Empfänger wählt anschließend „Karte importieren“. Eine Speicherkarte oder ein Kabel tun es genauso.

Über das Mesh selbst läuft das bewusst nicht: Dort reisen Nachrichten in kleinen Paketen, die jedes Gerät in Reichweite mitträgt. Eine Karte von bis zu 1.700 MB würde dieses Netz für alle in der Umgebung über Stunden blockieren — genau dann, wenn es für Hilferufe gebraucht wird.

Warum die Karte so schlicht aussieht

Die Karten sind bewusst kein Google-Maps-Ersatz. Sie zeigen Straßen nach Wichtigkeit, Gewässer, Bahnlinien, Ortsnamen und Straßennamen — mehr nicht. Kein Gelände, keine Gebäude, keine Geschäfte, keine Navigation.

Der Grund ist die Größe: Jede zusätzliche Ebene macht die Pakete größer, und sie müssen auf ein Telefon passen, das man im Ernstfall dabeihat. Ohne Gebäude und Geschäfte ist ein Bundesland etwa halb so groß. Was bleibt, ist das, was zur Orientierung wirklich zählt: Wo bin ich, wo ist der Ort, welche Straße führt dorthin.

In dicht bebauten Gegenden hat nicht jeder Straßenname Platz. Dann hilft Hineinzoomen — je näher, desto mehr Namen erscheinen. Für die eigentliche Aufgabe, einen Treffpunkt zu benennen und wiederzufinden, reichen Ortsnamen, Straßenverlauf und die Peilung per Kompass ohnehin meist aus.

Die Karten werden aus offenen Daten selbst erzeugt und auf dem Gerät gezeichnet. Es gibt keinen Kartendienst dahinter, der pro Abruf Geld verlangt, und keinen, der protokolliert, welchen Ausschnitt du wann betrachtest.

Offline maps

These map packages make choosing a location in the app independent of any network. Download them now, while you still have internet — during a blackout they work without any connection.

Three steps

1. Download the file for your region below.
2. In the app: Me → Settings → Offline maps → “Import map”.
3. Done. When sending a location you now get “Choose on map”, and “Show on map” for received ones.

Passing maps on — even during a blackout

If you did not download a map before the network went down, someone else can hand you theirs: in the app every map has a “Pass on” action. It sends the file via Quick Share (called Nearby Share on some devices) — the two phones connect directly over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Direct, with no internet or mobile network. The receiver then uses “Import map”. A memory card or a cable works just as well.

Deliberately not through the mesh itself: messages there travel in small packets that every device in range carries along. A map of up to 1,700 MB would clog that network for everyone nearby for hours — exactly when it is needed for calls for help.

Why the map looks so plain

These maps are deliberately not a Google Maps replacement. They show roads by importance, water, railways, place names and street names — nothing else. No terrain, no buildings, no shops, no navigation. Every extra layer makes the packages bigger, and they have to fit on a phone you actually carry; without buildings and shops a region is about half the size.

In densely built areas not every street name fits. Zoom in and more of them appear. For the actual task — naming a meeting point and finding it again — place names, the road layout and the compass bearing are usually enough.

The maps are generated from open data and drawn on the device. There is no map service behind them charging per request, and none logging which area you look at.

The flags come from flag-icons by Panayiotis Lipiridis, MIT licence. They ship as SVG alongside the page and are not fetched from anywhere.
